Creative Digital Photography Ideas and Tips

Knowing The Different Photography Styles

Creative photography can mean many different things. It just depends on the type of photography, what the photography is for, who is photographing, who or what is being photographed and so on. Here I will list some of the main digital photography topics - and we will go from there and study some in-depth ideas for creativity in the various photography styles.

Creative Photo Editing

One of the more artistic examples of creative photography would have to be photo editing. This involves photograph distortion either through direct manipulation of the settings, both camera settings and light settings DURING the photographing - or photography manipulation after the photograph is taken , usually using photoshop of any other photo editing software.

This is usually for artistic purposes - if you dont count the facial 'touch-ups' and other cosmetic purposes.

So you will have 2 separate paths to consider - 1 will be to learn manual dslr settings and light settings and the other is learning how to use photoshop or photo editing software in general. Here are some links to some info at DIY Digital Photography as well as 2 separate digital photography guides that cover both of the creative photography styles mentioned here:

DIY Creative Product Photography Ideas

So product photography is more along the lines of technical skill, lighting , props and backgrounds. The real creativity with this type of photography is coming up with home made lighting and studio features , as well figuring out different ways to present your items/products in a way that showcase certain features and capture the customers attention , creating a strong impulse to buy.

There are many different sizes, shapes , finishes and uses when discussing the range in products that must be covered when discussing product photography and creative methods for presenting. But one of the things that will spread throughout all the various items will be lighting. Not just types of lighting, brightness, color and styles - but how to MANIPULATE light properly going from items that are shiny , like jewelry to things that are bulky or dull, like furniture, clothing and others.

Your true creativity will come in time after you get  more experience dealing with the different products, lighting and other settings. To get started you can simply follow some guidelines as they are discussed on the following links - and experiment along the way until you start to master all the different adjustments that can be made.

Creative Portrait Photography Tips

Portrait Photography is similar to product photography in a lot of ways - from using various lighting techniques to proper backdrops and angles. Of course when dealing with people on a regular basis we will have to shift our thinking from object manipulation to creating personal 'moments' with people and families using body language, props and natural surroundings and seasons.

I love the creative freedom that comes with portrait photography - the are really no limits to what we can do to create a spark or liven up a photograph.

Thre are also alot of diy projects that can be done from backdrops and props to studio set-ups and staging ideas. For this, if you are to give portrait photography a serious go, I definitely recommend buying popular books that deal with the various portrait photography creative tips and ideas. For $25-$50 you can some really great stuff. And the best part is that you will receive many great ideas that can be used in the different situations that you are sure to inherit throughout time.
